src="http://news.oneindia.in/img/2010/11/02-playstation-logo.jpg" width="120" />
It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real but I assure you, the picture below is in fact the PlayStation Phone that you've long been waiting for. The device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform.

The device is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mock up shown earlier this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multi-touch, and you can see in the photos online that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.

The particular model in this shot is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices) and is said to be rather buggy, but it's likely that much of what was reported earlier is still accurate and though the device could still be headed for a 2010 release, 2011 is looking much more realistic. Still, there's a lot of time between now and the holidays... so keep your fingers crossed!. What do you guys think is this going to be worth buying or just a fad like the PSPgo.

Valve reveals 'The Sacrifice' DLC for L4D1 and 2

On October 5th, Valve will release a new campaign for both Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2 called The Sacrifice, a story which bridges the gap between the two games, and explains the mysterious events of previous downloadable campaign The Passing. As a special treat for Left 4 Dead 2 owners, they’ve also carried the original game’s No Mercy campaign across to Left 4 Dead 2. And everyone will get a huge 190 page comic beforehand, leading up to the events of The Sacrifice.

The original plan was to make The Sacrifice for Left 4 Dead only. L4D2 had The Passing, and its counterpart was meant as an exclusive for the original game. Chet explains. “It’s a really fun campaign, it’s got lots of high Hunter leap points and stuff. And we said ‘You know, this would be really cool in Left 4 Dead 2. Some of these locations would be cool for the Spitter and the Charger.’ So we decided we’d release The Sacrifice not just for Left 4 Dead 1, but for Left 4 Dead 2.”

He says this DLC links the two stories. “Do you really want to make the people from Left 4 Dead 2 buy Left 4 Dead 1 if they don’t own it?” Yes, I suggest, from a corporate perspective. “That’s kind of weird, right?” Apparently, to Valve, it is. The Sacrifice will be a three-map campaign, but a longer one than Crash Course or The Passing due to the size of the maps. “The finale’s a new kind of finale,” says Chet, “there’s three objectives you have to go and do.”

The decision to add No Mercy to Left 4 Dead 2 was simply that it was very popular with players, and Valve like it a lot. “When we first changed them over,” Chet says, “they were brutally hard. Your strategy of holing up in corners just disappears, because the Spitter is going to wreak havoc. The Rooftop of No Mercy now, with Chargers and Tanks, is… you’d better not stand by a ledge.”

They addressed that by giving players the best of Left 4 Dead 2’s arsenal, including several of the mighty M60 machineguns added by The Passing. “You’re playing as the Left 4 Dead 1 characters in Left 4 Dead 1 maps, but you get melee weapons, the new weapons, the defib – all the stuff from Left 4 Dead 2. You get to see Zoe with a chainsaw, Zoe with an axe,” Chet says with ill-hidden lust.

The comic is part of a conscious effort by Valve to expand their game worlds into other mediums. The short films they’ve made for Team Fortress 2, and that game’s own comics, have been incredibly successful – both in pleasing players, and attracting sales. It’ll be released in episodes starting in early September, and the final chunk will cover the same ground as the DLC itself. “The final part that explains what happens to Bill takes place the same time as the game,” says Chet, “so you can either play it or read it – or both. You’ll know exactly how and why Bill died.”

The final twist is that the launch of this DLC will coincide with the launch of the Mac version of Left 4 Dead 2. The DLC will be available for all three versions – free on Mac and PC, the usual 560 points (£4.80/$7) on Xbox 360.

Everything in this announcement is positive: L4D1 players are still getting what they were promised, and L4D2 players are getting extra. But that doesn’t always mean it’ll go down well. Those who only own Left 4 Dead 1 could be put out that L4D2 players are getting a better version of their DLC, plus a whole campaign from their game. Probably not, though. Most of the fuss over Left 4 Dead 2 was down to a fear that the first game would be abandoned. That clearly hasn’t happened – this will be its second DLC campaign, on top of the Survival mode they added in April last year. With this update, they’ll even be adding in some improvements from Left 4 Dead 2 into the first game. “We’re going to update the Sniper Rifle to be more like the one in Left 4 Dead 2,” says Chet, “because people seem to like that one better.”

In a separate interview, Valve MD Gabe Newell told me, “the thing that makes me happy is when you look at the customers who self-identified as boycott members, they actually bought Left 4 Dead 2 at a higher rate than any other group of Left 4 Dead 1 owners.” In other words, the backlash was quelled by some diligent PR by Valve – including flying boycotters to their offices to let them play the game ahead of release.

I have to ask Chet, and marketing director Doug Lombardi, if there’s a cut off point for making Left 4 Dead 1 DLC. “At this point, who knows?” says Chet. ”We haven’t quite arm-wrestled that one out.” Doug adds. “If people tell us by the amount of play time and purchases on the Xbox side of this that they want more, then we’ll probably make more.”

Source PC Gamer

Asus AT5IONT-I

Asus AT5IONT-I Fanless ION2 Mini-ITX Motherboard. Other cases supporting standard height heatsinks.

My Thoughts:

The motherboard supports up to 4 GB DDR3 RAM which will be more than enough for most tasks, the system would be perfect connected to a large TV or monitor through either HDMI or DVI to watch movies etc!. ASUS AT5IONT-I has a regular 24 pin ATX connector for power, but the Deluxe model with an external AC power supply, WiFi and Bluetooth might be a better choice for some with more connectivity to our other devices (mobile phones etc!). Personally I would love to get my hands on one and probably make a compact multimedia PC or use it for MAME inside a arcade cab, which it would be capably of running perfectly with a nice frontend. One issue is that the AT5IONT-I supports up to 4GB maximum memory across 2x DDR3 SODIMMs running at 800MHz meaning this board will only work with a very limited range of memory modules.
text-align: center;">

Historically, video game manufacturers have had it easy: roll out a snazzy new box every few years with more processing power and better graphics. But innovation was mainly limited to how many more sprites or polygons could be rendered on a single 2D screen at one time. Despite trends that are a comfortable blanket of predictability, the video game market is about to change in some radically new directions, from augmented reality to stereoscopic displays to motion control. But are gamers really ready for the transition to 3D displays? Is it a technology that we actually want?

Remember that this isn't the first time that manufacturers have experimented with 3D displays in gaming. Despite being widely ridiculed by the public, Nintendo's Virtual Boy showed that 3D depth was a viable way to push gaming in new directions, way back in 1995. Of course, the eye-strain and headaches caused by staring at red LEDs for any prolonged period of time didn't help the machine's fortunes.

Mario's Tennis was one of the very first home consumer stereoscopic games.

With the potential of 3D stereoscopic gaming to birth gold or smelly piles, developers are exploring this new direction with carefully calculated moves. The market for 3D is very fragile in its current state of flexing withered biceps on the "Kermit and Friends" digital masterpiece at Disney World. Always associated with holographic cereal box cards and childish picture shows, 3D needs to hit a major growth spurt before the public will accept the change as a fundamentally strong platform addition. What are the things that 3D will need to have before anyone will take it seriously?

First of all, throw out the glasses please! Having to wear glasses in order to view 3D images actually serves to remove one from the interactivity that the experience should offer. Game developers work tirelessly to offer the best play possible and it's almost certain the cumbersome face gear would be an unwelcome obstruction. Who would want to keep up with gear that's as awkward as a Burt Reynolds mustache anyway? Next, keep the games we expect to have as 2D with the option of 3D. There is nothing as potentially disappointing as a 3D only Final Fantasy or any other notoriously popular title. Finally, rather than an all or nothing move, it would be wise to straddle the line between a successful business model and a soon to be tried market experiment.

Jumping completely on the bandwagon for 3D will be a sure fire shot in the foot. 3D is just another strata on top of the layers of consumer possibilities, but doesn't quite yet have the maturity and diversity to stir the soil into a newer and healthier creation. If successful however, it could be a nudge in a completely new direction for gaming. Either that or adaptations of the technology could be inspired, similar to NASA and their memory foam that's now an overpriced slab shaped bed for folks susceptible to the effects of placebo. In any event it will be exciting to see what 3D morphs into during its development through more sophisticated iterations. Anyone that doesn't think so can go find a cooler dimension to fall into.

Source: PSPWorld

A Knockoff PSP We Actually Kind of Want

We've seen many PSP clones over the years, but here's one we wouldn't mind actually getting our hands is the PXP-900. This jack-of-all-trades device is primarily an MP4 video player, but it also runs emulated retro games, plays music and comes with a built-in camera. One potential problem with the device is the price, which at $90 USD is a lot more expensive than what we are used to seeing with cheap PSP knockoffs.

As a result of cramming so many things into this device, none of the included features are really cutting-edge. For starters, the device only supports a 320x240 screen resolution and 25 fps playback of games. That analog nub is not really a functional controller on this machine, but rather an external loudspeaker.

Still, for the price you do get a pretty competent portable media player that can support just about every audio/video file format under the sun, including AVI, MP4 and WMV. The PXP-900 also comes with 2GB of on-board storage (which is more than what the PSP currently offers), and an SD card port that accepts up to 4 GB of additional memory. The device has no wireless adaptor to speak of, so transfers have to be done via USB.

Being a Chinese knockoff, the PXP-900 is also very friendly to hackers. According to the manufacturer, the device supports any operating system you feel like installing, from Windows XP, to Mac OS 10, to Linux. How they pulled that feat off with this machine is beyond us, but we'd love to see one in action or try it out for ourselves. The device can also play emulated games from a host of retro systems including the NEW, super NES, Sega Master System, Gameboy Advance and Sega Mega Drive. How you acquire and install those ROMs is left up to the consumer.

Rounding out the list of features is an E-Book reader, a built in microphone capable of recording audio, a VGA-resolution external camera and a TV out jack.

Source: PSPWorld

Six Things You Should Know About Your PS3

So you just got your shiny new PlayStation 3. Of course you know it can play Metal Gear Solid 4 and Blu-rays, but there’s much more this beast can do than meets the eye. Well, as it turns out, the creative minds over at Sony have built in some great features that you may not be aware of. Some are gaming-related, some are there for ease of use and some are just downright brilliant. Here is a list of features that new PS3 owners may have overlooked.

1) Playing PS1 games

While the original 20, 60 and 80 gig PS3’s could also play your old PS2 games, the feature has unfortunately been removed from newer models. What many gamers don’t realize, however, is that all PS3’s play PS1 games. Regardless of the model or hard drive size, every PS3 system is backwards compatible with PS1 games. So get out there and find some old classics for gaming on the cheap!

-Ever since PS2 backwards compatibility was removed, rumors have reverberated around the internet that a patch will eventually add the feature back in to all PS3 models. Will this rumor ever come true? It would be nice, but at this point, over four years into the PS3’s lifecycle, it seems unlikely. If you want to play old PS2 favorites, you better hold on to your PS2 console for now.

2) Sharing PSN games

Yes, you read it right. You can legally share games that you download off the Playstation Network. Most games that you download allow for five activations on five different consoles. All you have to do is let your friend sign in to your account and download the games you’ve purchased! It’s a surprisingly simple feature that seems too good to be true. Thanks Sony!

-Never share your account information with someone you don’t trust. Scammers will promise you a trade some other sort of deal and then hijack your account by changing your password once you’ve given up your information.

-Even if sharing with a friend, it’s a good idea to remove any billing information beforehand.

-If you run out of activations, you can deactivate accounts from the consoles you have shared them with in order to recollect your activations.

3) Upgrading the hard drive

Sony has made it extremely easy to upgrade the storage capacity of your system. All you need is any 2.5” SATA internal hard disk drive (a standard laptop drive). The original PS3 drive runs at 5400 rpm so it would be wise to look for comparable specs when making the change. The swap is simple: You back up your information, remove the old hard drive, insert the new one, format and restore!

-You’ll need an external hard drive formatted to fat32 in order to back up your data.

-Be careful with the screws on the hard drive caddy, they’re easy to strip.

4) Output audio and video via different cables

If you ever wanted to output video to your TV and audio to, say, your stereo, it’s a simple process. Simply connect your video with one cable, most likely HDMI if you have an HDTV, and your audio with RCA (the red/white cable). In audio settings, you can output audio through RCA while your video is simultaneously being fed through HDMI. This is a great way to bypass often-terrible stock TV speakers. If you have surround sound, you’ll most likely use the “optical out” option for your audio needs.

-You can find stereos with RCA inputs that cost significantly less than surround sound systems and will bring your audio up to par with the image on your TV.

5) Reset video/audio settings without the controller

This one has saved me a ton of frustration. Say you unhook your PS3 from your huge 1080p LED LCD TV and bring it over to your friend’s house to play some co-op games together. Unfortunately, you forgot he has a tv that doesn’t support your TV’s insane resolution. Now, when you turn on your PS3, it just shows a black screen. Instead of calling one of your PS3-owning friends and having him walk you through the XMB display settings click by click (trust me, not a fun process!) you can utilize my favorite feature of the PS3. When the PS3 is off, press and hold the power button. Do not let go until you hear a second beep from your machine after about seven seconds. Voila! Your Display and audio settings have been detected and you can now play on your friend’s crappy old tv!

6) Expand your black levels

If you’ve got a high-end HDTV, it may be capable of displaying a huge number of shades between black and white. The PS3 has an RGB setting, which can be set to either “normal” or “full.” By default it is set to normal. Go to the display settings and go down to RGB full range (HDMI) and select full. You should notice a more vibrant picture. If your TV supports it, this feature will show richer colors and darker blacks. If not, you may lose detail in dark images. You can check your TV’s manual or look online to determine whether your TV supports this mode. If, for instance, you go to change your brightness in an in-game menu and you can’t see the brightness test (commonly a logo on a black background that is supposed to be faintly visible), then you should keep the setting on normal.

These are just a few PS3 features that will help you get the most out of your system.

TheNewNet.eu Website

The new and improved newnet website is now up and running here => thenewnet, why not check it out and also join the forum to see what we are talking about.

We might be talking about something interesting or why not mention a topic you would like to talk about with us.
